“Overseas visitors were most likely to be found in popular tourist destinations. The district with the highest proportion of overseas visitors was Queenstown-Lakes, where 1 in every 4 people (25.5 percent) counted on census night usually lived overseas. Three other districts recorded more than 1 in every 5 people as an overseas visitor on census night. They were Mackenzie (24.5 percent), Kaikoura (22.1 percent) and Westland (21.6 percent) districts.”
“It is considered in the order of 900 new residential dwellings will be built in the district over the next 10 years. This compares to less than 200 new residential dwellings constructed in the last 5 years.
These predictions are based on both known land development proposals and probable developments as a result of continued growth in the tourism sector. It is estimated that 350 new jobs will be created in that sector over the next 5 years with an additional 50 in the industrial sector. The increase in popularity of coastal towns in general and Kaikoura in particular as a destination to retire to or as a change in lifestyle should see the 900 being achievable.
Statistics NZ population projections for the area over the 20-year period from 2001-2021 show only a minor population increase is anticipated. However, the census provides only a partial picture of the usually resident’ population of the district, and does not take account of the number of people staying in the district during the peak tourism season, or the projected future demand for land and infrastructure services. This means that the land/building “footprint” in urban areas is outstripping population growth.”
IMPORTANT NOTE: The above Growth projections made by the council in 2006 is now outdated. l Currently for 2007 there are 907 sections under development with over half of these having reached title already.
Figures on traffic volumes were provided for two locations. First location was 01S00144 which is a continuous site north of Hapuku River around 10kms north of Kaikoura. This site had an average over the 30days of September of 62,395 cars, motor homes, buses etc. January recorded an increase in traffic volume by 80% to 111,967 cars. The second site 01S00156 is on Beach Rd in Kaikoura located close to where the new development will be built. In September the car volume on beach road was 189,810 over the period of a month. In line with the 80% increase in volume for the first site over January, this calculates to a month’s statistic of 341,658 vehicles. Broken down to a daily figure on Beach road equates to 11,388 vehicles passing by for the month of January.
